I’m personally pro-life, but I don’t want to force my views on others. Why should I vote for Amendment 3?

Amendment 3 isn’t about forcing beliefs—it’s about protecting innocent human life. Just as laws protect children after birth, this amendment ensures children before birth are given the same protection. It reflects compassion, not coercion.

Doesn’t Amendment 3 ban all abortions, even in difficult cases?

No. Amendment 3 makes clear exceptions in tragic circumstances such as rape, incest (within the first 12 weeks), and for the life of the mother. It balances protecting life with compassion in heartbreaking situations.

What about women facing serious medical complications—will doctors still be able to help them?

Yes. Nothing in Amendment 3 prevents doctors from acting to save a mother’s life. Physicians will continue to provide the care women need. What this amendment does is stop elective abortion being used as birth control.

Isn’t it extreme to make abortion illegal after 12 weeks in most cases?

Not at all. By 12 weeks, a baby has a heartbeat, fingers and toes, and can respond to touch. Most Missourians agree it’s reasonable to protect life at this stage. Amendment 3 reflects both science and compassion.

I’m worried Amendment 3 will hurt women. Isn’t access to abortion about women’s health?

Real women’s health is about safe pregnancies, prenatal care, and support—not ending the life of a child. Amendment 3 protects women by requiring abortion facilities to meet health and safety standards, while promoting alternatives and support for mothers.

Will women who have abortions be punished under Amendment 3?

No. Amendment 3 targets the abortion industry, not women. Women are often pressured or misled into abortion. They deserve compassion and healing—not punishment.

How does this amendment affect families dealing with tragic diagnoses like disabilities?

Every child deserves a chance at life, regardless of challenges. Amendment 3 protects children with disabilities from being singled out for abortion and encourages support for families instead of pressure to end a pregnancy.

Why not leave this up to individual choice?

Every choice has limits when another life is at stake. We don’t allow someone to harm a newborn, and Amendment 3 recognizes that unborn children deserve the same protection. True freedom never comes at the expense of another’s life.

Missouri already has pro-life laws. Why is Amendment 3 necessary?

Our current protections are under attack in the courts. Amendment 3 secures them in the Missouri Constitution, so judges or politicians can’t simply undo them. It’s the strongest safeguard we can give the unborn in Missouri.

We, the Catholic bishops of Missouri, are committed to protecting the sanctity and dignity of all human life, including the poor and needy, refugees and immigrants, prisoners on death row, and mothers and children.

In Missouri, this dignity is being threatened by the pro-abortion amendment passed in 2024. That amendment enshrined a sweeping right to abortion in the State Constitution and eliminated the legislature’s ability to set common-sense safeguards for the abortion industry, including the requirement that only doctors perform abortions, the requirement that parents be notified and give consent before their minor child has an abortion, and the requirement that abortion clinics be licensed and inspected.

This year, Missourians will have the opportunity to restore those safeguards by voting for Amendment 3. The proposed constitutional amendment will protect women’s health and safety and restore protections for the unborn.

We ask the faithful and all people of good will to join us in prayer and fasting for the success of Amendment 3 and to support each human person from conception to natural death.
